Batman Vs Robin review

This is only the second animated film I have reviewed, still find it a bit weird reviewing them if I am honest, feels weird to not be talking about the same elements specifically the lack of acting you get to see and the fact it is all animated so the visual effects are on a different level in comparison to say Interstellar looks great and real, while the effects in animation are on par with the animation of the rest of the scenes if that makes sense to anybody but me? Ha.

Batman Vs Robin was directed by Jay Oliva a go to name in the DC animated universe working on the likes of "Batman: The Dark Knight Returns Part 2", "Batman: Assault On Arkham" and "Justice League: War". Yet again he delivers a thoroughly enjoyable animated film, cementing himself in the DC chair for a while I'd imagine. Teaming up with long time DC writer J. M. DeMatteis who has been working with DC characters since the early '90s, so what a great team to bring together for latest instalment in the franchise.

I was apprehensive at first when Jason O'Mara took over from Kevin Conroy, I mean Kev IS BATMAN, he has been a part of my life as Batman for as long as I can remember. However, O'Mara makes the role his own in a brilliant way, the rest of the cast performed well in their roles, especially Troy Baker as ever he gives a stellar performance. Plus there was a nice nod to the old with Kevin Conroy returning to voice Thomas Wayne, I personally didn't remember going into the film Conroy was returning, so hearing that familiar voice was a nice touch. There was a bit of a let down though, I was hyped to hear "Weird Al" Yankovic voicing Dollmaker, but he seemed to disappear before we even got to really appreciate his comedic style.

The animation is fluid and wonderful to watch,the actions scenes blended seamlessly into the more dramatic scenes, it was brilliant production. The scene may come across a bit gory to some, so if you're planning on watching with your children or allowing them to watch you want to check it out beforehand. The action is reminiscent of Son Of Batman in my opinion, feels like director Jay Oliva took inspiration from the success of that film and added his own elements to it. All the fight scenes are wonderfully executed especially the climatic scene in which we get to see the Bat-family take on some villains.

There is one MAJOR thing I believe they should have done differently and that is calling the film "Batman: The Court Of Owls", the title is a little bit misleading, the story centres mostly on the Court Of Owls. While having a lot to do with Batman and Robins relationship, it is heavy on the Court storyline, there is a fight scene between Batman and Robin, but the main story comes from the Court trying to run Gotham.

Overall, the film was a brilliant watch it really showcased the vast differing dynamics between Bruce and Damian's belief in what is true justice. In recent instalments the franchise of DC Universe Animated films have been pretty good the likes Son Of Batman (REVIEW HERE) and Superman Unbound stand out. I would say this is definitely up their with them. Another brilliant film in the DC Universe Animated series, DC are winning in the animated film world in my eyes, while Marvel are winning live action. It would take an awful lot for me to ever chance my mind on that.

Guillermo del Toro talks "Pacific Rim 2"

Guillermo del Toro has been speaking recently with Collider about the sequel to his hugely successful 2013 blockbuster "Pacific Rim". When asked about the timeline he said;

"It’s a few years after the first one.  It’s not an immediate follow-up.  It is the world having been freed of Kaiju, what happens to the world after – what happens to the Jaeger technology once the Kaiju are not a threat.  It’s quite a jump."

 

Del Toro went on to say;

 

"Yes.  It’s quite a different movie from the first one in that, but I think that two of our main characters like in the first one are Burn and Charlie.  They are really, really – I mean, honestly, they are probably the guys I have the most fun writing along with Hannibal Chau so just from a purely selfish drive, I like writing them.  I love writing for Charlie and Burn.  I mean, [Burn's] in Crimson Peak for that reason, because I love working with him.  You’re gonna get a lot of that, but the Kaijus are very different and you’re gonna see a very different type of the robots I think.  It’s gonna be quite a different adventure."

 

Also with this interview coming out, in the past couple of days we have learnt from Forbes that Guillermo del Toro has given in his finalised script for Warner Bros and DC's "Justice League Dark". When we will see that is down to WB executives moving it forward.

David Goyer boards Superman prequel show???

BleedingCool are reporting that David Goyer has signed on to a new tv show called "Krypton", this comes on the HUGE success of the new shows "Gotham", "Flash" and "Constantine" the latter of the two Goyer has a connection to.

There is very few details about the potential show right now, however, BleedingCool are speculating that the show will be a Drama based on the planet of Krypton involving the house Of El and Brainiac. The Kryptonian scenes from "Man Of Steel" were well received by fans, one could speculate that this also had a influence in why the show was given any traction.

Jesse Eisenberg's Lex Luthor wanted for Suicide Squad

David Ayer recently signed on to DC Comics to direct the upcoming "Suicide Squad" and according to newest reports they are looking at BIG names to join the film names like Ryan Gosling, Tom Hardy, Margot Robbie and Will Smith, looks like another big name is being touted. Academy Award nominated Jesse Eisenberg is looking likely to continue his DC arc with Lex Luthor making the switch from "Batman vs Superman" to "Suicide Squad".

There has been MANY collectives of the Suicide Squad since their creation in the 1950s including probably more DC villains than the everyday fan or even fanboy could name. They have been used most recently in CW's "Arrow" and the animated "Batman: Assault On Arkham".

DC want female director for Wonder Woman

According to a report by TheHollywoodReporter, Warner Bros are looking for a female to helm the upcoming "Wonder Woman" film, and to say there is a short supply of female directors in Hollywood would be an understatement. There is a few females taking on big projects like Katheryn Bigelow "The Hurt Locker", Lexi Alexander "Punisher: War Zone", Patty Jenkins and "Thor: The Dark World".

I personally would love to see Kathryn Bigelow take over the role of directing, she has some fantastic films in her filmography and has the experience to take the project to the next level. Any suggestions of who you would like to helm the project?

Geoff Johns talks The Flash and DC future

Geoff Johns has always been a favourite of many comic book fans around the world, however in recent years he has gone from comic book writer to DC's go to man for TV and Film he is currently working on the three new shows this year "Gotham", "Flash" and "Constantine". Johns recently done an interview with BuzzFeed and spoke about the potential DC "Multiverse", here is what he had to say;

"We had talked about it previously being distinct," Johns said, "but I can't really talk about the films. We haven't really gone into detail about what that stuff is so I don't want to get too detailed yet," adding "You have to have conversations about what's happening in TV and film between everybody because you don't want to do the same thing. That's super, super important."

"'Arrow' and 'Flash' are the same universe, and we get a lot of great story out of that - especially when we have episodes that cross them over, but that's also where our superhero universe lives," Johns explained. "We look at it as the multiverse. We have our TV universe and our film universe, but they all co-exist. For us, creatively, it's about allowing everyone to make the best possible product, to tell the best story, to do the best world. Everyone has a vision and you really want to let the visions shine through… Maybe one day we'll link a show to a film if it makes sense, but the creative process we're going through right now is to let the stuff live and breathe and be its own thing and own it."

 

"We're trying to utilize as many characters as we possibly can," Johns said, "but there is a conscious effort to explore the DC universe. Like on 'Constantine,' we already have Jim Corrigan, we put Dr. Fate's helmet in the pilot; that wasn't just a easter egg. I like the term easter egg, but I prefer all our easter eggs actually lead somewhere, that they're foreshadowing… There might be someone out there who sees Dr. Fate on an episode of 'Constantine' and suddenly they love that character and they become a creator later on and tell me they have a great take for a Dr. Fate TV show. That's what we want to happen. Like, I can't believe Gorilla Grodd's gonna be in a 'Flash' TV show. That's insane."

"We have 'Supergirl' and 'Lucifer' in development, and they're both very different than everything we're doing now," promised Johns. "It's well past time there's a female superhero out there, both in film and on television, and it's awesome that we're on the forefront of that… 'iZombie' was like this dark horse than showed up because Susan Rovner [co-president of Warner Horizon Scripted Television] and Rob Thomas had been talking about doing something new and we had been talking to Susan about 'iZombie,' and she helped champion that."

Ray Fisher talks Cyborg in the DC Universe

While Ray Fisher is a widely unknown talent, earlier this year he was cast as Victor Stone (Cyborg) in the upcoming DC Universe. In a recent interview with EntertainmentWeekly, Fisher gave us confirmation that he is not only set to appear in "Batman vs Superman: Dawn Of Justice" he is also set to appear in both "Justice League" films and the "Cyborg" solo film in 2020.

"I didn't know the extent to which DC and WB had planned on taking my character," Fisher tells the outlet. "When I signed on, I just wanted to be part of this world. But that specific information, I found out then and there. I didn't think I'd be getting my own stand-alone film... Let me tell you, man, people are in for a hell of a treat."

Marvel & DC films before 2020!

With the recent announcement from Warner Bros & DC about their line up, we now have the full Marvel & DC line up for the next 6 years. Check out the list, feel free to correct me if there is any mistakes. As it stands there is 27, yes 27 coming in the next several years, that is without Justice League Dark, solo Batman, solo Superman and the Star Wars reboot 6 of them, so probably closer to 40!

Warner Bros and DC announce their line up!

So here it is the news we have ALL been waiting for, for months now, Warner Bros & DC's lineup for them to try take on the comic film behemoths Marvel. Up to now all we have had was release dates for nine untitled films, now we have TITLES!

Anyway, enough beating around the bush, here is the official press release;

As part of his presentation, Tsujihara announced a bold expansion of the industry's broadest theatrical slate, built around the largest, most important global franchises. Warner Bros. Pictures will release three LEGO-branded films over the next four years, building upon the enormous success of this year's "The LEGO Movie" ($468 million worldwide box office), starting with "Ninjago" in 2016, directed by Charlie Bean and produced by Dan Lin, Roy Lee, Phil Lord and Chris Miller. Batman will take a star turn in "The LEGO Batman Movie" in 2017, directed by Chris McKay, and the sequel, "The LEGO Movie 2," will debut in 2018. 

The Studio will release three pictures, in 2016, 2018 and 2020, based on best-selling author J.K. Rowling's original story and screenwriting debut, "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them." Set in an extension of her familiar wizarding world, featuring magical creatures and characters inspired by Harry Potter's Hogwarts textbook and its fictitious author, Newt Scamander, "Fantastic Beasts" will be directed by David Yates, who directed the last four Harry Potter movies, and reunite the filmmaking team of David Heyman, J.K. Rowling, Steve Kloves and Lionel Wigram. 

And, in a massive expansion of the Studio's DC Entertainment-branded content, Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema will release a slate of at least 10 movies--as well as stand-alone Batman and Superman films--from 2016 through 2020 that expands this prized universe of characters:

Potential actress for "Supergirl" TV Show

With Laura Vandervoort coming out to have a brief talk about the potential "Supergirl" show, I thought it would be fun to do a little bit of fancasting. Here are some actress I would like or wouldn't mind seeing take over as Kara with her potentially being added to the every growing DC Cinematic Universe. As always when I do my "fancasting" these picks will not be in order of who is more suitable, just in the order in which they pop into my head.

Amber Heard - Amber has been on a steady incline over the past few years, even though she does a lot more film than television roles. She has been known to dabble in the ever growing television market. She has had roles in "Criminal Minds", "Californication" and "Playboy Club" so she has some television pedigree, however I still think she is perfect for the role of Kara.

Yvonne Strahovski - Opposed to what I said about Amber, Yvonne is well versed in the television world, she had big roles in "Heartland", "Chuck" and most recently "24: Live Another Day". Plus she is mainly here because she rocks! I mean there has been talk for years about her playing Supergirl or even Captain Marvel/Carol Danvers or ANY other strong female superhero since her days as Sarah on "Chuck". She may be a bit old for the role considering they are going for a younger woman, however, she just fits the bill and I think most would agree.

Laura Haddock - Laura is a current favourite of mine, in recent years she has been very versatile in her acting from Comedy in "How No To Live Your Life" to all out Drama in "Da Vinci's Demons". It would be weird seeing her make the switch to DC already having two different Marvel roles under her belt, however her work in "Da Vinci's Demons" really showcases her acting ability, plus being a Brit would be great to see another one of us playing a superhero ha.

Lyndsy Fonesca - Lyndsy is well versed in the same way that Laura Haddock is she has jumped across many genres, mostly known for her work in "Kick-Ass" films and playing Alex in CW's "Nikita", which lends to her ability to pull of good fight scenes and execute some well acted scenes.

Aly Michalka - Michalka may not even be a possibility due her recent joining of CW's upcoming show "iZombie", however is that is cancelled or doesn't work out, then she is pretty close to perfect for the role she played a great role in the short lived "Hellcats" Drama a couple of years ago. So if they were to go younger not long out of High School Aly would be high up my list.

Alexandra Daddario - Daddario has already played a Demigod in the recent Percy Jackson film series and she has also shown her acting ability in "True Detective" and proven she's a pretty good "scream queen" due to her Horror roles in the past years. It's not fair to base a casting on just looks, however that is a main reason in which I picked her she is unbelievably good looking also talented, plus look at those eyes! I MEAN COME ON!

Hayden Panettiere - Is Supergirl that dissimilar to Claire from "Heroes" really? Well I know she is, just saying Panettiere is has done a very similar role, one that really helped propel her into the A-lister she is right now. She has all the talented need, she looks the same age as she did in "Hereos", she has a dedicated fanbase and she is pretty perfect for the role.

Nicola Peltz - With Peltz only being born in 1995, she may be the perfect age for the role if they plan to go on a nice long run like CW done with "Smallville". Peltz is relatively new to the acting game, but her recent addition to the "Transformers" franchise will make her a HOT property in the coming months.

Jessica Nigri - VERY OUTSIDE CALL, not even a serious call, just a pure fanboy casting considering her dedication to the nerd world and cosplaying. She probably can't act to save her life, however, she has made a HUGE dedication to the nerd world and comic related everything for years.

David S Goyer talks DC future

We already have two DC new shows this year, and they are both off to a great start Gotham and Flash are both getting great reviews from fans (critics views do not matter if the viewers keep up and the fans are happy). Just around the corner we have the "Constantine" television series, and show runner/developer David S Goyer has recently done an interview with ScreenRant.

SCREEN RANT: Speaking of storylines, we all know that Constantine…with other characters like Zatanna, or any of the other DC magic people. Would it be possible to see Justice League Dark in any way, shape, or form? Would you want him to be a part of something like that?

GOYER: Yeah. I think you’ll see some of those…If the show takes off…even within the first 12 episodes we’ve introduced two or three characters from the broader DC universe that are not just exclusively from Hellblazer. Corrigan has been mentioned, but there’s a couple of other characters we haven’t talked about that will show up as well. If the show takes off and we get our back nine and come back a second season, we sort of have access to that whole corner of the occult universe. So, hopefully we’ll be introducing those characters as is appropriate.

SCREEN RANT: I know a lot of fans have a question about the structure of the master, just via TV or as it’s shaping up as a whole. You’ve got shows like Arrow, like Flash, like Supergirl from CBS. You’ve got Titans on TNT. You have Constantine on NBC. Different networks but all one studio company. I think a lot of fans are wondering is there room for movement even though these characters are on different networks, because they are under one master house? Could we see them interact?

GOYER: You know, never say never. There aren’t any immediate plans, but it would be interesting to try that, to do kind of an internetwork crossover. I think anything’s possible. But we have to get our sea legs first. We’ve gotta premiere in a couple of weeks, and hopefully the audience likes what we’ve got and then we’ll see.

SCREEN RANT: I know one of his biggest confrontations that everyone would love to see adapted on the screen was Constantine and Swamp Thing. Is that something that has been thrown around at all?

GOYER: It’s been thrown around. It’s not something I think we’d attempt in the first season. We need to make sure that we can pull off the special makeup effects. We don’t want to do a cheesy version of Swamp Thing. It’s a lot easier to do Dr. Occult or Satana or Jim Corrigan than it is to do Swamp Thing. So we’ll see.

Laura Vandervoort talks upcoming "Supergirl" show

The beautiful and talented actress that portrayed Kara Zor-El in "Smallville" has given her words of wisdom for the woman to take over the role in a recent interview with IGN.

"Make sure you have some Nike soles in there. Just kidding! So you can run. Just make it your own. Everyone has an idea of how she should be, which I was concerned about when I played her, but when you find a way to relate to her and then bring your own self into it, I think people appreciate it. You can’t make everything the same. So, just make it your own."

Warner Bros fast-tracking LEGO Batman SOLO!!!

Questions starting circulating after this years "The LEGO Movie" would Batman ever get to go solo, recent reports began to circulate Arnett would be voicing the pompous Bat again. These reports are also saying that the film will be released in 2017.

2017 may sound familiar as LEGO date for all you fans out there, that is the same year in which we are getting a LEGO Movie sequel. So, YES a LEGO Movie sequel AND a LEGO Batman SOLO!!! With Will Arnett returning to voice the Bat, great news for all fans out there.

"Son Of Batman" review

Synopsis: "Batman learns he has a violent, unruly pre-teen son, secretly raised by the terrorist group the League of Assassins." IMDB

This is my first ever review of an animated film, which is kind of strange considering I have seen pretty much every DC and Marvel film released in the past 15 years aswell as a lot of Disney and Pixar. Anyway that's neither here nor there,back onto the review.

The film is based on a 2006 story arc written by Grant Morrison who has written for so many characters and arcs isn't surprising his work is being adapted into films.

The film starts off with a huge training camp being destroyed that we know is owned by the Al Ghul family, a young boy and Mother escape to the boys Father, who turns out to be none other than Batman himself. Batman takes his newly revealed son under his wing deciding to train and protect him from what has already happened.

Bruce allows Damien to join him and Robin, in fighting crime, but keeping the criminals alive in typical Batman tradition, throughout this time a huge development happens which will soon have a incredible impact on the plot.

The film has a pretty short run time, which isn't to bad due to the fact we do not really need that much characters time, however I would like to have had seen some more on screen relationship progression between Bruce and Damien. Also they did make Deathstroke a bit less of a badass than his usual-self, I mean he gets a beat down more than once by a teen none the less, however that does add to Damien being a very skilled fighter.

Overall, the film is a very enjoyable watch full of Action, Ninjutsu style acrobatics and katana based fighting resulting in lots of violence and gore which surprised me when watching because I didn't realise the rating. The voice acting overall is pretty good besides Batman, Jason O'Mara seems to just be reading his lines not putting any emotion or passion into them, the rest of the cast is pretty good nothing special. It does have a strange animation about it, it almost feels like an 80s maybe 90s style look to it, I enjoyed it seen a few people complaining about though.

"Suicide Squad" film in the works

Warner Bros and DC are pushing forward their plans for a feature film involving the Suicide Squad (also known as Task Force X), the idea has been in the works for a few years now. However looks like they are really pushing the idea forward with them apparently tapping up director David Ayer ("End Of Watch" & "Sabotage") to helm the project.

New 52 Wally West WILL join "The Flash"

In a recent interview Executive Producer on both "Arrow" and "Flash" Greg Berlanti has been talking about the future of the "Flash" show before it even has started, here is what he had to say;

"What’s very cool is in the New 52 they hadn’t reintroduced Wally [yet]. When they reintroduced Wally [in the New 52], they made him African-American. So now and forever, Kid Flash will be African-American."

He went on to say;

"We made the West characters African American so we can eventually head in that direction, absolutely… That’s our hope."

 I personally haven't been following the New 52 revival of DC as much as I would like to, plus I NEVER look into Flash he was never a character I cared about. However after hearing about this story I decided to check out the new Wally West, DAMN he looks badass! Check him out below.

Official Batman vs Superman, Bruce's age

Today we finally learned the official age of the Bruce Wayne/Batman that Ben Affleck will portray in the upcoming "Batman vs Superman", not that we ALL didn't know he was playing a Bruce around his own age. Producer Michael Uslan gave us "confirmation" of our beliefs;

“So, this [controversial superhero casting] has happened time and again, and it happened with Affleck. To go back to the original thought of Bruce Wayne in his mid-40s, I think he’s going to be extraordinary.”

Some people may ask why does Ben look in his 50s in the pictures that came out in recent days, my personal guess is to make Henry Cavill look a lot younger than Ben, in a sense making Superman the younger of the two like they would be in a world in which Batman had been doing his thing for two decades.

A few days ago Warner Bros and DC announced release dates for 9 upcoming films that do not have a title as of yet, along with the 9 DC films, Warner Bros announced two of their own films which are set to release in the next 6 years. Now onto the speculation, which we all know it fun, in my honest opinion the two "Untitled WB Event Film" listings that were announced will be the two newest instalments in the Harry Potter franchise "Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them", as for the DC films that is where the fun begins.

This is pure speculation on my behalf, however in my heart I know (clearly do not) we will be getting a Justice League, Batman solo, Justice League Dark, Shazam, Sandman, Wonder Woman solo, Man Of Steel 2. The others could be a Green Lantern reboot, Justice League 2, Flash and Lantern, Lobo.

Actors who could take over as Joker???

Now that we have Batman being rebooted within the DC Universe, I think we NEED to bring back Joker and get over the fact that the last man who played him died. Yes it is heartbreaking that Ledger died, however that shouldn't stop up seeing Joker again. This is just a quick piece I will be putting together in about 45 mins maybe an hour, so don't hate on me too much if I fall way shy of the mark.

Benedict Cumberbatch

I am a huge fan of Cumberbatch, so there may be a bit bias in my decision but I think he would be great. He played Kahn recently in the second instalment in the Star Trek rebooting franchise who has elements of Joker the same can be said about his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes. He is pretty much my first go to guy with ANY villain before I get into details, he plays the villain/anti-hero so well, if he does not become Joker I give it a couple of years before DC or Marvel snap him up to play a villain in their every growing worlds.

Christoph Waltz

I know, I know his accent is usually that of a European man. However, putting that aside I think that Waltz would be brilliant he is a highly established actor and has won 2 Academy Awards in recent years. He has the acting ability down to a tea, but can he play The Joker? That is another question, he does take your eye to him with severe concentration whenever he is on screen, you are sitting there hanging off every word he says same happens when you think about Joker talking in the comics.

Mads Mikkelsen

I will just say watch "Hannibal" on NBC an you will see why ha.

Willem Dafoe

Just think of him as Green Goblin, he was just perfect, plus casting him as Joker might actually make the Internet explode from fan boys so he should be case for that reason alone ha.

Robert Knepper - Do I really need to say more than "Prison Break"?

Aaron Paul - Jesse was a broken, angry, desperate, emotional character, plus with Eisenberg as Lex proves they like to cast obscure and young.

Sharlto Copley - The man seems like he is up for anything and I think he would put a nice twist on the Joker that we haven't seen before.

Matthew Gray Gubler - I just love this dude, ever since I seen him in the early episodes of "Criminal Minds" I just thought yes, this dude is going to be good.

"Constantine" TV Series update

We all know that NBC are working on their adaptation of the hugely popular Constantine comic, today we have some further plot details and characters we are likely to see in the pilot. These WILL BE SPOILERS if they come true, however for now they are still rumours, but could still be SPOILERS. Scroll down for the details, I repeat SPOILERS.

• At the beginning of the first episode, Constantine has checked himself into a psychiatric institution after witnessing a 9-year-old girl have her soul taken to hell by a demon. When he checks himself out, he’s been there for six months.
• Constantine “is a clever wise-ass” who “masks his emotions with humor.” Hopefully, he’s more deadpan than, say, boisterously sarcastic.
• In the TV version of Constantine, Papa Midnite will be Cuban instead of Jamaican. Apparently, he can “dream the future” and when we meet him, he’s “doing a lot of cocaine because he has to stay awake.” For what reason? It doesn’t say. Though we do know that Midnite will be the primary villain of the show – for at least the first season.
• A regular girl named Liv Parsons – seemingly a vehicle to help viewers understand this supernatural world – discovers that something nefarious is coming for her. She teams up with Constantine, who used to be friends with her dead father and owes him a debt. Their team-up will apparently form the basis of the show.
• Constantine has an angel named Manny “assigned” to him to “help ease his soul into damnation.” Which seemingly confirms that his background will be similar to that of his comic book counterpart. In the comics, Constantine stopped a demon from taking the soul of a dying friend. For this, the demon promised to send Constantine to hell when he died.
• In the first episode, we’ll see all kinds of supernatural craziness, including “possessions, ghosts [...] and demons.”
• We’ll also meet “Chaz” – Constatine’s driver – a “tall, sensitive, quiet type” with a lot of knowledge about the supernatural. In the comics, his name is “Chas” Chandler, who was previously played by Shia LaBeouf in the 2005 Keanu Reeves film.
• And now for the most important thing: Constantine won’t be wearing his famous trenchcoat…at first. But he will eventually. So don’t get too up-in-arms.
