When I first heard about "The Voices" I was pretty excited, finally a film that Reynolds would get to act and we can see if/what he can really do given a good script. Reynolds has had a bit of a bad run in the cinema in recent year I mean we will all never forget how horrifically bad "Green Lantern" and you would be hard done by to find another person like myself that enjoyed "R.I.P.D". HUGE thanks to Peter Noble PR for the opportunity to review the film.

Arrow Films are bringing the hugely loved "The Voices" to UK shores this coming Monday July 13th, the film is being released on DVD, Blu-Ray and Steelbook, the wonderful steelbook is a Zavvi exclusive. Either of the options will take you to the best place to purchase said copies.

"The Voices is directed by Marjane Satrapi, the Iranian author and filmmaker best known for the Academy Award nominated animated film Persepolis (2007). Ryan Reynolds stars as a troubled, med-addicted factory worker driven to murder by his talking pets, a psychopathic cat called Mr. Whiskers and Bosco, his peace-loving dog. Reynolds also voices both of the animals, while Jacki Weaver, Gemma Arterton and Anna Kendrick play the women unfortunate enough to cross his path."

Firstly let's start with the cast, the decision to cast Ryan Reynolds in role was an inspired one he is a truly talented actor that not many people get the chance to see actually act. His roles in "Buried" and "Safe House" I can't recommend any higher, same goes for this, playing Jerry Hickfang he disturbingly felt at home. Reynolds played the character so well that there was times the viewer is dragged in deep into illusion of lost connection with reality. Gemma Arterton and Anna Kendrick play Hickfang's unwilling accomplices, Arterton was a wonderful comedic break from the dark story Kendrick on the other hand I personally struggle to enjoy not sure what it is, this time she has won me over playing the smitten Lisa she was a fun addition to the cast. Then we get to Reynolds voicing Bosco the dog and Mr Whiskers obviously the cat, some of the lines for these characters were so hilariously executed by Reynolds you actually fall in love with them even if Mr Whiskers is a bit on the naughty side. The entire cast were thoroughly enjoyable.
This is the first film I have seen by director Marjane Satrapi and if this if anything to go by I am quiet sure I will be following her career for a long time. She blends perfectly the highs and lows of a Jerry's struggle between reality and imagination, be it from the belly laughs you get from Mr Whiskers and Bosco to the rock bottom lows of Jerry's realisation of the real world. Satrapi succeeds in keeping you entertained from start to end, in regards to the end don't skip the credits you're in for a wonderfully funny treat which I did not expect but loved.

Onto the story, people constantly complain about Hollywood being lazy and constantly remaking the same stuff, this film is certainly NOT the case. Writer Michael R Perry ("The River" TV show & "Paranormal Activity 2") really excels in making something new and fresh his character development and witty written conversations between Jerry and his pets were incredible, not only did he write something extremely funny, he writes a script in which we really get to see Reynolds perform his best role to date in my opinion.
Overall, I found the film to be wonderfully funny was a brilliant mix of dark and light Comedy, Marjane Satrapi does very well at blending the two into one cohesive mix. This film is the perfect film for any fan of the black comedy genre, everything coming together from Reynolds superb performance, to the pacing of the film to hilarious retorts by Mr Whiskers and Bosco you're in for 103 minutes of pure fun. In short I absolutely loved this film, I couldn't recommend it any higher to Reynolds fans or just Comedy/Horror lovers in general. Plus it gives us an insight into what Reynolds can do with a disturbed character with a warped view of reality, *cough* Deadpool *cough*.
8/10

Why "Deadpool" should NOT be PG 13!

Where to begin on why "Deadpool" should not be a PG 13, well the main reason it should be is because you will struggle to find a single fan who agrees with the idea of it. There has been talk about the potential idea of a solo Deadpool film since Ryan Reynolds played the Merc With a Mouth back in 2009 in "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" however in my opinion they should drop Ryan Reynolds get a new Deadpool!

So after the leaked footage surfaced a few months ago, the whole comic world went absolutely crazy with excitement, the details we could make out through the grainy imagery was a brilliant look at how it may be done. However, Fox decided to release their HD version of said test footage resulting in a lot of us being let down, turns out that the whole thing was CG, nobody wants that Fox, NOBODY! If you haven't seen it, you're in luck (kind of);

Given this test footage it was safe to assume that we would be getting a 15/18 or R-Rated depending on your location, however, turns out we were all wrong it's looking very likely now that Fox are set to make the film a 12/PG-13. Could they be any further from being right?
Hello, Fox? DO WE MATTER?!?!
Lets all be honest, is Reynolds a viable option still? I mean David S Goyer signed on to make a solo Deadpool film in February 2004 and back then Reynolds was attached to star, so for OVER a decade they have been trying to get it made and haven't even came close. Surely somebody doesn't have faith in this project or it is just not meant to happen. I say start from scratch wipe it all clear and start from scratch anyway I digress back to PG-13. I will post some panels from Deadpool comics to prove that child friendly rating is so wrong it's laughable.
Child friendly idea???
Surely this is child friendly with its sexual overtone?
What about a one armed Wade?
Surely Wade's physical appearance is child friendly?
That's just four panels I came across doing a tiny bit of looking, my time reading a few Deadpool comics I guess around 30, there is probably countless ones in them alone that prove my point. Just because you own the rights to a character Fox, doesn't mean you should bend the idea over and go in dry. You just have to look at what use done in "X:Men Origins: Wolverine" to see how you destroyed a character, even the look in Origins was awful.

I envision this is how the majority of Deadpool fans are sitting right now awaiting your decision Fox, do the right thing, GIVE US GORE AND VULGARITY!!!

New poster for "R.I.P.D" is here

We have a new poster for the upcoming Sci-Fi buddy bop film "R.I.P.D" starring Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges. I like this poster, even though the tag line "defending our world one soul at a time" seems drastically out of place.

"R.I.P.D" first official trailer

Universal Pictures have blessed us with the first trailer for "R.I.P.D", the film does look pretty funny.

"Two cops dispatched by the otherworldly Rest In Peace Department to protect and serve the living from an increasingly destructive array of souls who refuse to move peacefully to the other side.

Veteran sheriff Roy Pulsifer (Bridges) has spent his career with the legendary police force known as R.I.P.D. tracking monstrous spirits who are cleverly disguised as ordinary people. His mission? To arrest and bring to justice a special brand of criminals trying to escape final judgment by hiding among the unsuspecting on Earth.

Once the wise-cracking Roy is assigned former rising-star detective Nick Walker (Reynolds) as his junior officer, the new partners have to turn grudging respect into top-notch teamwork. When they uncover a plot that could end life as we know it, two of R.I.P.D.'s finest must miraculously restore the cosmic balance...or watch the tunnel to the afterlife begin sending angry souls the very wrong way."

A few days ago we seen a photograph of the poster for "R.I.P.D" on display in a cinema, now we have an official poster for the film.

"A recently slain/deceased young cop joins a team of undead police officers working for the Rest In Peace Department and tries to find the man who murdered him."

Deadpool movie could address his Wolverine appearance

20th Century Fox seem to taking forever to start making their Deadpool film, since his appearance in "X-Men Origins: Wolverine". Now that we have a new video game coming soon, does that mean they will be moving forward with the film soon? Apparently there is already a script for the film written by "Zombieland" creators Paul Wernick an Rhett Reese. Tim Miller is also rumoured to be directing the film, so when will we get it?

"I love Deadpool and there is a script that’s in development. But it’s so, so far into the R-rated zone… it’s a nearly NC-17 world and I just don’t know if the studio would ever risk their reputation doing it. We’ve been developing it and we would never wanna do it unless you could it that R-rated way, so... You could do it for a pittance compared to the modern sort of epic scale superhero movies, but it’s about a guy who knows he’s in a movie and knows he’s in a comic book who is deeply mentally disturbed and hyper violent, and that’s tough to get by a studio."

The most interesting thing that came from this interview, is that Reynolds said the film might address the insane abomination of Deadpool that we seen in "X-Men Origins: Wolverine".

"In the current iteration of the script, it doesn’t address Wolverine – though it does address Deadpool’s appearance in Wolverine. Deadpool was not happy with Deadpool in Wolverine. He has a sort of a WTF!? moment with that. The script is one rewrite away from Deadpool jumping across the desk at the studio executive and attacking him," Reynolds told them.

"I’ve always wanted to do the movie just if only because Deadpool would get to do his own movie trailer, so that’s a thing that we were dying to do and we would love to be a part of that."

Ryan Reynolds not interested in Green Lantern

It's a well known fact that Warner Bros. is working on bringing DC Comics' Justice League to the silver screen. However it looks like the studio may have to find themselves a new Green Lantern. During an interview with Empire, "Green Lantern" star Ryan Reynolds" explains why he doesn't plan on reprising his role of Hal Jordan anytime soon. Can you really blame him? The first film wasn't the best but if I'm being honest Reynolds gets a lot more bad press than he deserves for that film. He was working with a terrible script and idea an done what he could with it.

"I saw how difficult it is to make that concept palatable," he explains, "and how confused it all can be when you don't really know exactly where you're going with it or you don't really know how to access that world properly. That world comic book fans have been accessing for decades and falling in love with. So at this point I have very little interest in joining that kind of world."

For all you worried fans out there, he did go on to say that he is not completely writing himself off from the film. The right man at the helm could help persuade him to return.

"[A] great script and a good director can always turn that around," he admits. "...I believe that Joss Whedon is the guy that just nails it and Christopher Nolan obviously nails it. So if they were gonna do it like that, it would be an interesting thing to do."

Ryan Reynolds lands Highlander role

Well it looks like the rumours I've been reading for the past month or so about Reynolds landing the Highlander reboot are in fact true. Reynolds films of recent years have been very hit & miss, I mean "Safe House" was pretty good great Thriller especially because Denzel was on top for as ever but then there was "Green Lantern" and "Adventrueland" which I would use are a torture technique rather than a viewing pleasure. But, with his casting in this an the "Deadpool" film and "R.I.P.D" hopefully producers are seeing him as more of the Action star than the Rom-Com star he has been.

"We first heard of the possibility of Reynolds becoming the next member of the Clan MacLeod back in March when the Canadian actor emerged the front-runner for the coveted role. The “confirmation” comes from The Tracking Board who claim that negotiations are complete and that Reynolds has officially secured the gig."

Role sealed, but in all honesty this doesn't mean we will be seeing "Highlander" on the big screen anytime soon. Reynolds was originally cast as Deadpool around the same time he was cast as Green Lantern an as you know Green Lantern has been out for over a year now and "Deadpool" hasn't even began pre-production.

Deadpool has no connection to "X-Men Origins"

Deadpool in "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" was a pretty bad ass character, he was easily me second favourite after Wolverine obviously. They ruined him towards the end though, I mean he went from a sword wielding bad ass to a grey thing and thing is the only word to describe him. Luckily for us according to Ryan Reynolds this character is getting a good old fashioned "do-over".

"(Deadpool) will actually have no connection to the one that was in (X-Men Origins:) Wolverine.
This falls in line with comments made by producer Lauren Shuler Donner in May, who said Deadpool would be a complete reboot of the character. The actor also said that the Deadpool script is still being developed, and that they are aiming for an R rating.
The script is, I think, fantastic. It’s been developed even further in the last three months or so. The film has to be rated R, and it has to be done a certain way, it has to do all these things that I am sure can be worrisome for the guy cutting the checks for it, so if it’s going to be done, it needs to be done right."

"Deadpool" could enter production this year

I thought this film was definitely going to have been scrapped by now or at least have a completely different staff and cast, I'm extremely surprised Ryan Reynolds is still attached to this project. I thought he would have moved on by now, he's a man in demand right now in Hollywood with his roles in "The Croods", "R.I.P.D" and "Safe House".
"The Geek Files report that Deadpool will indeed go into production at some point this year. While director Tim Miller has been attached to the project since last April, there’s been little news in regards to the official status of the spin-off – we were repeatedly assured that it was still happening, just not when exactly. Of course, it was only last week that artist Rob Liefeld revealed that he’d seen eight minutes of test footage for the R-Rated flick."

16 January, 2012

Fox has shot 8 minutes of "Deadpool" test footage?

At "Amazing Arizona Comic Con" last week Rob Liefeld and Scott Lobdell spoke about the possible upcoming "Deadpool" film, with a shocking admission!

"They've got a great director on the movie, they've got a great script. I may or may have not seen some sort of test of footage that would blow your mind if you saw it and go holy crap and that's Deadpool in costume. Katana swords, guns, shooting people’s faces off and making me laugh. And I may or may not have seen something that looks just like that. And you've got what would amount to the first R Rated X-Men movie. Because that script is R Rated.

They may or may not have wanted to shoot eight minutes to see how it would play. And all I can tell you, it's close. It’s closer that it's even been to going, or going Naaah, that's too scary a proposition to make a R Rated Deadpool movie"

Below is a video of the full panel, Tom Miller is set to direct the film and Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are set to write the script.
