"Robocop" is not a remake says Joel Kinnaman

SFX Magazine recently spoke to the Robocop himself Joel Kinnaman about the upcoming film, he had some interesting things to say about his casting in the film.

“When I first heard there was gonna be a RoboCop remake, I thought, ‘Maybe I’ll see that somewhere down the line. But it’s nothing I’m interested in pursuing myself.’ Then when I heard it was José Padilha that was gonna direct it, I became very interested. José has fought very hard and succeeded in making something that has a point of view, and a political and philosophical perspective.”

Kinnaman also spoke about remaking such a classic film, he doesn't consider it a total remake.

“It’s a great responsibility. Especially in a world where there’s a lot of remakes being made for cynical economic reasons. But having José as a director washed away those fears. The biggest respect you can pay to the original is to acknowledge it as a very intelligent movie, and try to make something intelligent to follow it up with, and not just replay old catchphrases. We kept one or two as a wink to the fans, but we did not try to remake the movie.”

I'm not 100% sure if I am sold on this movie yet, being a huge fan of the original there is just something about this one that doesn't sit right. Check out the newest trailer below.

So what do you guys think of this trailer? I was a little shocked with how well the suit looked after they had touched it up. After seeing the released set pictures I had extremely low hopes for this film, now I'm so-so looking forward to it. You can't beat the beautiful brutality of the '87 original but these guys seem to be going for a more hands on approach over the concept of his humanity.

Official synopsis for "Robocop" reboot

The reboot of "Robocop" seems to be picking up a lot of late, it is pretty highly anticipated by fans of the Sci-Fi orientation. We've got the official synopsis for the film right here;

"Plot: The year is 2029 and multinational conglomerate OmniCorp is at the center of robot technology. Their drones are winning American wars around the globe and now they want to bring this technology to the home front. Alex Murphy is a loving husband, father and good cop doing his best to stem the tide of crime and corruption in Detroit. After he is critically injured in the line of duty, OmniCorp utilises their remarkable science of robotics to save Alex’s life. He returns to the streets of his beloved city with amazing new abilities, but with issues a regular man has never had to face before."
 

"RoboCop" casting

Over the past week or so there has been a new confirmation for the upcoming "Robocop" remake an that is that Samuel L Jackson will play a charismatic TV mogul.
"Jackson will play Pat Novak, a charismatic TV mogul. Most recently, Jackson starred as Nick Fury, but this Christmas he will be reunited with the director who put him on the map, Quentin Tarantino, in Django Unchained. With Robocop, the popular actor can now add yet another high profile blockbuster to his already impressive resume. Jackson is currently Robocop‘s biggest star, yet there are a few other recognisable names in the mix, too."
I'm glad there is such a big name attached to the film now, maybe people will start to take notice of it an it will get more hype.

 I'm not personally a fan of Hugh Laurie, I grew up with his and Stephen Fry's poor sketch show but it looks like he is set to star in "Robocop" also as possibly the main villain?
"House star Hugh Laurie is in negotiations to take on the role of the evil CEO villain in Jose Padilha’s (Elite Squad) reboot of Robocop. Laurie is a great actor who’s got everything it take to play a great villain, I’m surprised he has had more villainous roles in his career."

Joel Kinnaman describes "Robocop" look

The main question on everybody's lips since Joel Kinnaman was announced as "Robocop" is I'm guessing "what will Robocop actually look like?", wonder no more as Kinnaman has gave us an insight to what he's going to look like. Kinnaman also revealed that Robocops' eyes would play a much bigger role in this film than in the past Robocop films.

"There’s a lot of neuroscience now raising the question, ‘Is all the intelligence in the human body in the brain?’ and they’re finding out that, no, it’s not like that. The body has intelligence itself, and we’re much more of an organic creature in that way. It’s not a control tower that does everything.” “RoboCop is going to be a lot more human. The first movie is one of my favourite movies. I love it. Of course, Verhoeven has that very special tone, and it’s not going to have that tone. It’s a re-imagination of it. There’s a lot of stuff from the original. There are some details and throwbacks, but this version is a much better acting piece, for Alex Murphy and especially when he is RoboCop. It’s much more challenging.” “It’s not going to be jaw action. They’re still working on the suit and how it’s going to look, but the visor is going to be see-through. You’re going to see his eyes.” The film is due to begin shooting in August and Kinnaman also feels it should be rated R. I sincerely hope they’re going for R ‘cause I can’t imagine how RoboCop could be PG-13. That would be a huge mistake. If I have any say in it, I will fight very hard for it. It has to be violent."

"Robocop" reboot has a lead???

MGM are continuing forward with their plans to make a "Robocop" reboot, the director of "Elite Squad" Jose Padilha joined the project last year an reports are now suggesting that MGM have pick their main man Joel Kinnaman from TV's "The Killing". Multiple casting rumours over the past few months have had names like Russell Crowe and Michael Fassbender attached to the project.

A small biography on Joel Kinnaman, because I guess a lot of people will not recognise him from name nor picture. Kinnaman was born in Sweden in 1979, he work primarily in Sweden up until early 2011 when he was cast in "The Killing" (American remake of a Danish show) an went on to star in "The Darkest Hour", "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" and more recently the Action/Thriller "Safe House". Kinnaman was also considered for the lead roles in the blockbuster "Thor" and the upcoming "Mad Max 4" losing out to Tom Hardy.

In a recent interview director Jose Padilha said;
"RoboCop is a brilliant premise because the character is not a super-hero… He’s a man who’s been transformed by technology for certain purposes. And so that premise alone touches so many interesting subjects. What does it mean to be immersed in automated systems and deprived of free will? What does it mean to be used by corporations for certain purposes? How does the media spin things around to make certain interests accepted by the public? Those are all things you can see in the first RoboCop, and those are all things that are coming closer and closer to being real. Science is taking us there. And so that premise alone is really interesting to me."
